Dhankhar, 74, had recently undergone angioplasty at AIIMS, Delhi, and had been dealing with recurring health issues over the past year. Despite his condition, he remained visibly active in public life and continued presiding over Rajya Sabha sessions until recently.
His resignation coincided with the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, triggering political speculation.

In a brief letter addressed to the President, Dhankhar invoked Article 67(a) of the Constitution and stated that he was stepping down with immediate effect on medical advice.
He thanked the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, members of the Union Cabinet, and Members of Parliament for their support and cooperation throughout his tenure.

Appointed in August 2022, Dhankhar had over two years left in office. With his departure, he becomes only the third Vice President in independent India to resign before completing the term—unlike his predecessors V V Giri and R Venkataraman, however, Dhankhar’s resignation stems from health-related reasons rather than a bid for higher office.
