SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, August 4: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad inaugurated a five-day Executive Development Programme (EDP) on “Electrical Safety and Precautionary Maintenance for Sustainable Mines” on Monday.

The initiative aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of mining professionals in adopting safe and sustainable mining practices.

The programme was inaugurated by IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra in the presence of Prof. Sukanta Das, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering; Prof. Nitai Pal, Chief Investigator of the programme; and Prof. Pradip Kumar Sadhu, Professor (HAG) and Co-Principal Investigator.

Focus on Sustainability in Mining Practices

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Mishra highlighted the evolving meaning of sustainability. “The word sustainability has relative connotations with time, space, and place. In earlier days, its meaning was different—but now, the reference point has changed,” he remarked.

He stressed the importance of aligning mining operations with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring industrial growth without compromising environmental responsibilities. The programme, he added, is designed to blend theory with practical insights for safer and more responsible mining practices.

Structured Learning and Knowledge Exchange

Prof. Sukanta Das noted that this is the second such programme organized by the department this year. He emphasized that the EDP offers a comprehensive mix of classroom learning and practical exposure to ensure participants gain actionable insights.

Prof. Pradip Kumar Sadhu underscored the role of precautionary maintenance in avoiding disasters and ensuring operational safety. “Preventive measures are critical for sustainable mining operations,” he said. Prof. Nitai Pal proposed the vote of thanks at the inaugural session.

The event also witnessed participation from senior officials, including Prof. Rajni Singh, Dean of Corporate Communications, and Prof. M.K. Singh, Dean of Academics, who joined the technical sessions.

The EDP is expected to serve as a vital platform for knowledge sharing and building competencies essential for sustainable mining in India.
