Kolkata, August 25: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has once again intensified its probe into the teacher recruitment scam. On Monday, ED conducted raids at the premises of TMC MLA Jiban Krishna Saha and his relatives in Murshidabad, West Bengal.

The operation is linked to a money laundering case involving allegations of bribes taken in exchange for illegal appointments in government schools. According to sources, the ED team is searching for fresh evidence related to the financial transactions connected to the scam.

Jiban Krishna Saha first came under the scanner in April 2023, when the CBI carried out a 60-hour-long search at his residence. During the raid, he allegedly tried to destroy evidence and threw several mobile phones into a pond. He was arrested on April 17, 2023, in connection with the case.

What is the teacher recruitment scam?

The scam involves allegations that thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff were illegally appointed through the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC). Saha is accused of accepting hefty bribes to secure jobs in government-aided schools through fraudulent means.

Supreme Court struck down illegal appointments

In April 2024, the Supreme Court took a tough stand and annulled all illegal appointments made under the scam. The court also directed the launch of a fresh, transparent recruitment process. Later, on August 5, 2025, the apex court dismissed all review petitions challenging this verdict.

Several TMC leaders under investigation

The scam has brought several TMC leaders under the scanner. Apart from Jiban Krishna Saha, names of former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and other senior leaders have also surfaced.

Both the ED and CBI have questioned Saha and his relatives in the past. His wife, Tagari Saha, has also been interrogated in connection with the case.
