Gumla (Jharkhand), Sept 24: In a major success for the security forces, three armed members of the banned extremist outfit Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) were killed in an encounter with Gumla Police on Tuesday morning. With this, officials say the organisation has been nearly wiped out, with only two or three cadres still active.

Intelligence Leads to Operation

Acting on a tip-off received on September 23,  Gumla SP Harish Bin Jama, launched a joint operation in coordination with the Inspector General of Police (Operations) and the Inspector General of Police (STF), Ranchi. Intelligence inputs had revealed that JJMP members were hiding in the forests and hilly terrain around Kechki village, Rogri Toli, under Bishunpur Police Station limits, plotting a major incident.

A team comprising the Gumla QRT force, Jharkhand Jaguars (AG-07 and AG-16), and officers led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Suresh Prasad Yadav surrounded the area.

The Encounter

On the morning of September 24, the extremists opened fire on security personnel, forcing the police to retaliate in self-defence. In the ensuing gun battle, three JJMP members were killed:

  • Lalu Lohra, resident of Basartoli, District Lohardaga
  • Sujit Oraon, resident of Rored, District Lohardaga
  • Chhotu Oraon alias Satyendra alias Ravindra Oraon, 30, resident of Hosir, District Latehar

From the site, police recovered one AK-56 rifle, one INSAS rifle, one SLR rifle, and a large quantity of ammunition.

Criminal Past of the Deceased

Investigations revealed that all three slain extremists had a history of violent crimes, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, and violations under the Arms Act and the CL Act.

JJMP’s Decline

Over the past few months, security forces in Jharkhand have intensified anti-extremist operations. Key leaders of JJMP, including Supremo Pappu Lohara and several sub-zonal commanders, have been either killed in encounters or forced to surrender.

In addition, arrests of Maoist and PLFI leaders, as well as the neutralisation of multiple squads, have significantly weakened the extremist network in Gumla, Latehar, and Lohardaga districts.

Police records show:

  • 9 extremists killed in encounters
  • 3 arrested
  • 9 surrendered

“JJMP Almost Extinct”

Speaking on the success, Gumla Police stated that the JJMP organisation is now virtually extinct, with only two or three members still absconding. Authorities expressed confidence that these remaining cadres will also be arrested soon.

“This operation marks another step toward restoring peace in the region. Gumla Police is always ready to serve and protect the people,” the official statement read.
