THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Daltonganj, September 25: A 35-year-old mentally unstable man identified as Manjhi Lal Kushwaha of Chainpur block climbed up the rooftop of the foot over bridge on the Daltonganj railway station in the wee hours around 3.30 am on Thursday.

This man kept running on the rooftop from one end to another muttering, “Hum ko ghar jana hai.”

The Daltonganj railway station falls under the Dhanbad division of the East Central Railway.

Coordinated Rescue Effort

Daltonganj railway station superintendent Umesh Kumar told this correspondent, “It took us little over one and a half hours to control him. Town police, government railway police, railway protection force, fire brigade, electricity personnel all were pressed in for his rescue.”

SDPO Sadar Mani Bhushan Prasad, upon learning about this incident, immediately took action, instructing the government railway police to act swiftly.

Officer in charge of the town police station Jyoti Lal Rajwar coordinated with the government railway police, pressing in police personnel of the town outpost number 2 for the rescue of this man on the rooftop of the foot over bridge.

Brave GRP Officer Saves the Day

A brave cop of the government railway police, identified as Suresh Paswan, showing enough wisdom, courage and confidence, reached the rooftop of the foot over bridge and, with great patience and understanding, rescued the mentally unstable man safely and brought him down to the ground.

This cop did a tremendous amount of application of common sense, as this mentally unstable man could have done any extreme thing.

Passengers and other bystanders appreciated the concern of the entire railway teams for the safe return of this mentally unstable man from rooftop of the foot over bridge on the ground.

Lack of Mental Health Facilities in Daltonganj

Government railway police took the man with them. There is no mental asylum here in Daltonganj where such an unstable person can be housed.

There is one district mental health centre in the Medinirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in Daltonganj where there is no facility for any indoor patient.

Dr Ashish Kumar, the medical officer in charge of the district mental health centre at MMCH Daltonganj, told this correspondent, “We don’t have any separate unit or ward of mentally sick patients. We refer such patients either to RINPAS or to CIP in Ranchi.”

“Such a patient needs 24×7 medical observation. We don’t have nurses specialised in handling mentally unstable persons. We feel sad on this non-availability of the facilities.”
