Paris, Oct 6: In an abrupt turn, France’s Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu resigned on Monday, just hours after unveiling his new cabinet, marking the shortest tenure of any modern French government.

Lecornu, who held office for only 27 days, saw his government collapse after merely 14 hours of operation, sending French stocks and the euro sharply downward.

The resignation underscores the intensifying political crisis in France, where no party holds a clear majority in a fragmented parliament.

Lecornu, a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron, had spent weeks consulting with political parties before announcing his ministerial line-up on Sunday. However, both opponents and allies criticized the cabinet as either too right-wing or insufficiently so, fueling doubts about its stability from the outset.

On Monday morning, Lecornu submitted his resignation to President Macron, which was promptly accepted. The Elysee Palace confirmed the development, stating, “Mr. Sebastien Lecornu has submitted the resignation of his Government to the President of the Republic, who has accepted it.”

The resignation, unexpected and unprecedented in French politics, highlights the fragility of governance at a time when the country is already grappling with deep political fragmentation.

Lecornu’s brief stint has set a record for the shortest-lived government in modern France, intensifying uncertainty for both markets and the political landscape.
