New Delhi, Oct 16: Contempt proceedings will be initiated against lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who threw a shoe at CJI B.R. Gavai. Attorney General R. Venkataramani has approved the initiation of contempt action under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court about this development. Justice Surya Kant remarked that while the Court supports freedom of expression, the challenge lies in how to exercise control over such incidents.

Justice Surya Kant further stated that their faith never promotes violence and expressed concern over the commercialization of everything on social media. The incident occurred on October 6 in Courtroom No. 1 of the Supreme Court when 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai during a hearing.

Security personnel immediately restrained Kishore and removed him from the courtroom. After throwing the shoe, Kishore shouted slogans saying, “Hindustan will not tolerate insult to Sanatan Dharma.”

Following the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended Kishore’s license with immediate effect. Despite the incident, CJI Gavai stated that he was not disturbed and such events do not affect him.

The shoe-throwing incident and Kishore’s slogans were triggered by a comment made by CJI Gavai last month during a hearing on a petition for the reconstruction of a damaged Lord Vishnu idol at the Javari Temple in Khajuraho.

CJI Gavai had described the matter as a “publicity interest litigation” and told the petitioner to approach the deity directly, saying, “Go and tell the Lord yourself to do something.”
