Golden jubilee celebration of BIT Sindri’s Mining Engineering Department concludes

 

Dhanbad, Nov 17: The two-day Golden Jubilee Innovation 2025 celebration of the Mining Engineering Department at BIT Sindri concluded with keynote lectures delivered by leading experts from premier technical institutions and heads of major coal companies.

Chief speakers—Prof. Sanjay Kumar Sharma (IIT–BHU), Prof. D. C. Panigrahi (Former Director, IIT–ISM Dhanbad) and Prof. (Dr.) Ghanshyam, CDC Chairman—praised BIT Sindri’s academic culture, discipline, spirit of innovation and its longstanding national contributions.

The Mining Engineering Department organised the event in collaboration with BCCL, NCL, CCL, Jindal Power Ltd., DVC, WCL, ECL, Shar Projects, MCL, Hindalco, NLC India Ltd., along with TexMin of IIT–ISM as technology partner.

Industry leaders inspire students; emphasis on modernising mining education

Chief speaker S. P. Singh, Director (Technical)–Operations, NCL, reflected on his student days and encouraged students to dream big and explore the vast opportunities available in the mining sector.

Head of Department Prof. P. K. Singh welcomed the guests on the inaugural day, while Director Prof. Pankaj Rai underscored the need to update mining education in line with evolving technological demands.

An exhibition showcasing modern mining technologies and digital solutions was also set up during the celebration, attracting keen interest from students and professionals.

Panel discussion focuses on policy and regulatory reforms

Organisers said the highlight of the concluding day was Panel Discussion–III on “Policy and Regulatory Reforms for Responsible Mining.” Former CSIR–CIMFR chief scientist Dr. J. K. Pandey also attended the session.

Prof. P. S. Paul (IIT–ISM Dhanbad), Rahul Kumar Gupta (DVC), Dr. Vivek Kumar Himanshu (CSIR–CIMFR) and Piyush Kishore (BCCL) participated in the discussion, addressing responsible mining practices, regulatory modernisation and the challenges and opportunities linked to sustainable development.

Research presentations and closing ceremony

Chairman Dr. Sanjay Kumar Roy and Co-chairman Prof. Rajendra Murmu chaired the technical research paper session. Presentations included:

  • Sunil Prasad Singh and Om Prakash Jha on “Environmental Management in the Coal Mining Industry: Challenges and Solutions,”
  • Gopal Das on “Mineral Administration in Jharkhand.”

In the closing ceremony, Director Prof. Pankaj Rai expressed special gratitude to all the guests and emphasised the importance of collective contributions to the department’s growth. Head of Department Prof. P. K. Singh delivered the vote of thanks.
