Daltonganj, November 18: Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel in Daltonganj say they are puzzled by the presence of four “mysterious” women who reportedly appear in and around the railway station after sunset and engage in behaviour causing public disturbance.

Women Seen Only After Dark

According to GRP staff, the women — one of whom is said to be a mother of two — are rarely seen during the day but begin approaching passengers in the evening. Officers claim the group has been attempting to inappropriately engage travellers, prompting concerns over passenger safety.

Two nights ago, a scuffle allegedly linked to these women resulted in two men sustaining bleeding head injuries. Railway sources confirmed that a case of public nuisance and violence has been registered against unidentified individuals.

GRP Says Lack of Women Personnel a Barrier

GRP personnel told this correspondent on Monday, 17 November, “These four women have come here from outside the state. They get on the prowl in the evening.”
Sources added that the women appear to be “versatile” in their interactions with passengers.

When asked why action has not been taken, one officer responded, “There is no lady police in the government railway police set up here in Daltonganj.”

Current legal provisions prevent the arrest of women after sunset and before sunrise unless a woman officer is present and judicial permission is obtained.

SP Promises Support if Requested

When informed of the issue, SP Reeshma Ramesan said, “The government railway police should ask for lady cops. We will provide without fail.”

Railway Officials Urge Vigilance

Daltonganj Railway Station Superintendent Umesh Kumar said, “We keep asking the government railway police and the railway protection force to keep a tab on suspicious characters loitering around. These four take advantage of their being women.”

Nearby Slums Identified as Source of Frequent Disturbances

Railway sources noted that slum areas adjacent to the station premises often attract individuals struggling with alcohol or substance abuse, contributing to late-night altercations.
“Street women are behind every street fight,” one railway source claimed.
