New Delhi, Dec 11: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Thursday formally welcomed Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, who is on an official visit to India.

Justice Surasena, serving as the 49th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka since July 27, joined CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi on the bench for a special sitting, accompanied by a nine-member delegation from Sri Lanka’s top court.

CJI Kant said the Indian judiciary was privileged to host the Sri Lankan Chief Justice, expressing hope that the visit had offered “meaningful and constructive” exchanges. He also highlighted the deep cultural and emotional ties shared by the two nations.

Responding with equal warmth, Justice Surasena said it was a “great pleasure” to be in India, describing India as Sri Lanka’s closest neighbour and recalling centuries-old connections between the two peoples.

He noted that the relationship stretches back more than 2,500 years, referencing ancient links through Emperor Ashoka’s voyage from Bengal to Sri Lanka and mentions of the island nation in epics like the Ramayana.

The visiting delegation had earlier attended the Supreme Court Bar Association’s Constitution Day event and spent three days at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal. They are scheduled to visit the Delhi High Court next.

Other speakers, including Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Attorney General R Venkataramani, and others, briefly acknowledged the shared cultural and civilisational heritage binding the two countries.
