Mumbai, Dec 12: Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away at the age of 91. He breathed his last around 6:30 am on Friday at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra. According to information, Patil had been unwell for a long time and was undergoing treatment at home under the care of his family.

Several senior leaders from the Congress and other parties have expressed deep grief over his demise and extended condolences to the family. Those who paid tribute include Supriya Sule, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Dhiraj V. Deshmukh, and Prof. Varsha Eknath Gaikwad, among many others.

A large number of leaders are also reaching Patil’s residence for his final viewing and to offer their respects.

Shivraj Patil was an influential and experienced Congress leader from Chakur in Latur district, Maharashtra. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven times and held several key positions in the central government.

From 1991 to 1996, he served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. After losing the 2004 Lok Sabha election, he was sent to the Rajya Sabha and subsequently appointed as the Union Home Minister.

Shivraj Patil was the Home Minister of India during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He faced intense criticism for security lapses during the incident and resigned from his post, taking moral responsibility.

Born on 12 October 1935 in Chakur, Latur district, Patil began his political career between 1967 and 1969 with the Latur Municipal Corporation. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Science from Osmania University and pursued Law at Mumbai University. He held important portfolios in the governments of both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
