Ranchi, January 20: Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s visit to Davos for the World Economic Forum (WEF) has triggered a sharp political exchange between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), with both parties presenting contrasting views on the purpose and relevance of the foreign trip.
BJP Questions Need for Switzerland Visit
BJP state spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo criticised the Chief Minister’s Switzerland tour, calling it excessive and unnecessary. He questioned why the Chief Minister travelled nearly 7,000 kilometres to sign agreements with companies like the Tata Group, which already has a major presence in Jamshedpur, just 135 kilometres from Ranchi.
He also raised similar questions about reports of a possible agreement with Infosys, pointing out that the company’s headquarters are in Pune, a short flight away from Jharkhand. According to him, such agreements could have been signed in Ranchi itself without an overseas visit.
The BJP spokesperson alleged that the trip was being projected as an investment visit while effectively functioning as a tourism tour. He further claimed that the influence of the Congress, Jharkhand’s coalition partner, was becoming visible in the Chief Minister’s style of functioning.
Pratul Shah Deo also flagged the poor condition of small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Jharkhand, stating that the government had failed to focus on local industries while pursuing foreign investment. He recalled earlier announcements regarding a Volvo plant, claiming that no progress had been made. He also noted that the Industry Minister was not part of the official delegation.
JMM Hits Back, Alleges BJP Double Standards
Responding sharply, JMM General Secretary Vinod Pandey rejected the BJP’s allegations, calling them politically motivated and factually incorrect. He accused the BJP of double standards, stating that similar Davos visits by BJP-ruled states are praised as development initiatives.
Pandey cited the example of the Maharashtra government’s agreement with Lodha Developers signed in Davos, pointing out that Mangal Prabhat Lodha, a BJP minister in Maharashtra, is linked to the company, while his son signed the MoU. He questioned whether such agreements should also be labelled as tourism or conflicts of interest.
The JMM leader argued that global platforms like Davos are meant for international investment strategy, global partnerships, and long-term commitments, and not merely local-level negotiations. He said investment decisions by global corporations are not taken in isolation or proximity-based meetings.
Defence of Government’s Investment Approach
Vinod Pandey said the Jharkhand government has taken several steps to support MSMEs, local industries, and policy reforms, claiming that Jharkhand has now gained visibility on the global investment map due to these efforts.
He maintained that when Jharkhand presents its potential on an international platform, it should be seen as a move towards global recognition rather than political controversy.
The debate highlights the growing political friction over Jharkhand’s investment strategy, with the Chief Minister’s Davos visit becoming a focal point of contention between the ruling alliance and the opposition.
