SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, January 23: The Montanuniversität (TU) Leoben, Austria, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad to strengthen academic and research cooperation between the two institutions.

A two-member delegation from TU Leoben, comprising Dr Susanne Feiel, Head of the International Office, and Clemens Weihs, formalised the MoU during their visit to IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

Talks on Expanding Academic Cooperation

During their two-day visit, the TU Leoben delegation held detailed discussions with IIT (ISM)’s academic leadership, led by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM), aimed at deepening collaboration in teaching, research, and global academic engagement.

Other senior IIT (ISM) officials present included Prof. Tanmoy Maiti, Associate Dean (International Relations & Alumni Affairs), Prof. Sushrut Das, Associate Dean Academic (Post Graduate), along with faculty members from the Department of Mining Engineering.

As part of the visit, the TU Leoben delegates also toured and assessed key facilities and training galleries at IIT (ISM), including the VRMS Lab, Longwall Gallery, and Bord & Pillar Gallery.

Officials said these facilities highlight IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s strengths in mining engineering education, research, and industry-oriented training.

International Master’s Programme from 2026

A major outcome of the discussions was an in-principle agreement to launch an International Master’s Programme from the 2026 academic session.

The programme will be led by the Department of Mining Engineering, in coordination with allied departments such as Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, and Fuel, Minerals & Metallurgical Engineering.

The multidisciplinary programme aims to address the emerging global needs of the mining and minerals sector, officials said.

The visit was organised and hosted on behalf of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad by Prof. Sushanta Mukhopadhyay, Prof. Somnath Chattopadhyaya, and Prof. Radhakanta Koner, who coordinated meetings, facility visits, and institutional interactions.
