Ranchi, January 24: Usha Martin University organised a special screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary film Humans in the Loop for its staff members on Friday at the university auditorium. The screening was part of the university’s ongoing initiative to encourage engagement with socially relevant cinema and contemporary media practices.

Film Highlights Invisible Human Labour Behind AI

Humans in the Loop is a critically acclaimed documentary of around 90 minutes that explores the often-invisible human labour supporting artificial intelligence systems. Largely set in Jharkhand, the film highlights the lived experiences of data workers whose contributions are rarely acknowledged in global discussions on automation and technology.

The documentary has received international recognition and has been nominated for the 98th Academy Awards, placing Indian documentary cinema on a prominent global platform.

Filmmakers and Producers Associated with the Film

The film is written and directed by Aranya Sahay and produced by Kiran Rao and Biju Toppo. Producer Biju Toppo was present at the screening and interacted with the audience during a post-screening session.

Discussion on AI, Ethics and Academia

Following the screening, a detailed discussion was held with faculty members, focusing on the ethical, social, and academic implications of artificial intelligence, labour, and representation. The interaction offered insights into the filmmaking process and highlighted the role of media and educational institutions in addressing emerging technological challenges.

University Leadership Reaffirms Support

The programme concluded with the presence of Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Milind, Registrar Dr. Shiv Pratap Verma, Controller of Examinations Prof. Vinay Singh, and Dean (Academics) Prof. B. N. Sinha. University officials reaffirmed their support for meaningful academic dialogue and cultural engagement.
