Jamshedpur, March 17: Tata Steel has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) to jointly develop advanced low-carbon steelmaking technologies, strengthening its commitment to sustainable steel production.

The collaboration brings together research teams from Tata Steel, Tata Steel Research and Innovation Limited, and USTB to work on next-generation solutions aimed at reducing carbon emissions in steel manufacturing.
Key Areas of Collaboration
Under the agreement, the partners will focus on four major areas: scrap-based steelmaking, steel waste valorisation, enhancement of end-product performance, and carbon capture and utilisation technologies.

USTB’s academic expertise and advanced experimental and pilot-scale infrastructure will support the development, testing, and scaling of innovative solutions for industrial use.
Leadership Views on Partnership
Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology, R&D, NMB and Graphene, Tata Steel, said low-carbon steelmaking has become essential for the future of the industry. He emphasised that innovation remains central to Tata Steel’s strategy and that the collaboration aims to develop transformative technologies for long-term sustainability.
Shuqiang Jiao, Vice President of USTB, said the partnership reflects a shared vision for innovation and real-world impact by combining academic strength with industrial expertise.
Xinping Mao highlighted that green transformation in the steel sector is a global priority and key to achieving carbon neutrality, adding that the collaboration will advance low-carbon metallurgical technologies.
The initiative underlines Tata Steel’s focus on innovation-driven decarbonisation and the role of global partnerships in building a greener future for the steel industry.
