Ranchi, April 17: Jharkhand BJP State President and MP Aditya Sahu on Friday demanded that the Hemant Soren government immediately withdraw the recent hike in electricity tariffs, alleging that consumers are under severe distress due to “exorbitant” power bills.
He claimed that many ordinary consumers are receiving electricity bills ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh, forcing them to run from office to office to get corrections made. Sahu said he has personally taken up complaints with the electricity department officials.
Targets govt over corruption, unfulfilled promises
Launching a sharp attack, Sahu accused the state government of “looting the treasury” while burdening the public with high electricity costs. He termed the government a “loot and lies” regime and alleged that scams are surfacing regularly.

He also questioned the government over unfulfilled promises, including 200 units of free electricity, ₹3,200 per quintal for paddy procurement, LPG cylinders at ₹450, jobs for youth, and unemployment allowance.
Sahu further alleged that funds such as mining royalties and DMFT are being misused, and criticised the government for spending on projects like a ₹100-crore “Sheesh Mahal” while ignoring public welfare.
Smart meters, power issues add to concerns
Highlighting power sector issues, Sahu said faulty billing, delayed replacement of burnt transformers, and erratic supply have worsened the situation across urban and rural areas.
He alleged that smart meters are adding to consumers’ problems, with some being billed for an entire year at once and facing disconnections for non-payment. He also claimed that even the Electricity Regulatory Commission has raised concerns over the government’s approach.
Sahu said the BJP would intensify its agitation if the tariff hike is not rolled back immediately, calling the decision “anti-people.”
