Jamshedpur, May 18: A sharp rise in humidity coupled with elevated night temperatures has pushed the discomfort index higher across Jharkhand, leaving residents struggling with oppressive weather conditions despite maximum temperatures remaining close to seasonal norms in several districts.
Jamshedpur Among Most Uncomfortable Cities
According to the India Meteorological Department’s latest weather report, Jamshedpur remained among the most uncomfortable cities in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 39.6°C and a minimum of 29.6°C — around 4.2 degrees above normal.
The unusually high nighttime temperature and persistent humidity intensified discomfort, making conditions particularly exhausting for residents.
In Ranchi, the daytime maximum temperature was relatively moderate at 35°C, but the minimum stood at 25.2°C, nearly 1.8 degrees above normal, leading to warm and sticky conditions even during early morning and late evening hours.

Daltonganj Hottest in State
Daltonganj emerged as the hottest location in Jharkhand with a maximum temperature of 41°C, followed by Bokaro Thermal at 40.1°C. Chaibasa recorded 38°C.
Across much of the state, rising minimum temperatures and moisture-laden air significantly increased heat stress levels, with many residents describing the weather as “suffocating.”
“The elevated minimum temperatures are preventing the atmosphere from cooling overnight, worsening the discomfort index and increasing the impact of humidity,” weather officials said.
Thunderstorm Relief Expected
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph across most parts of Jharkhand on May 18, excluding north-western districts.
On May 19, stronger winds of 50-60 kmph are likely over Dhanbad and Giridih, while central and southern districts, including Jamshedpur, may continue to witness thunderstorms and gusty conditions.
The alert extends into May 20, with East Singhbhum, Hazaribagh, Koderma and Ramgarh likely to experience stronger wind activity and lightning.
Advisory for Residents
As Jharkhand braces for unstable weather conditions, residents have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, and remain alert to sudden thunderstorm activity that could bring both relief and disruption.
