Senior police officers shifted to headquarters as government cracks down on rising crime and policing lapses

Jamshedpur, July 1: In a sweeping administrative action aimed at restoring public confidence in law enforcement, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday night removed East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police Piyush Pandey and Seraikela-Kharsawan Superintendent of Police Nidhi Dwivedi (Pandey’s wife) from their posts with immediate effect, citing their failure to maintain law and order and effectively curb rising criminal activities.
Both officers have been attached to the state Police Headquarters pending further orders.
CM Announces Action, Warns Against Negligence
Announcing the decision on his official X handle, the Chief Minister said the action was necessitated by lapses in maintaining public order and negligence in exercising effective control over crime. He reiterated that public safety remains the government’s foremost priority and warned that no negligence or evasion of accountability would be tolerated at any level.
To ensure close monitoring of the situation in the Kolhan region, the Chief Minister directed the Commissioner of Chaibasa and the Additional Director General (ADG), Ranchi, to camp in the affected districts and conduct daily reviews of the law-and-order situation.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Kolhan, has also been instructed to remain stationed in Jamshedpur to personally supervise policing and security arrangements.
Murder Outside Jamshedpur Pub Sparks Public Outrage
The decision comes amid mounting public outrage over a series of recent incidents, most notably the murder of 24-year-old Himanshu Singh outside the Double Down (DD) night pub in Jamshedpur’s Bistupur area.
Singh was allegedly stabbed to death following a violent altercation outside the establishment, reportedly in the presence of on-duty police personnel.
The incident triggered widespread protests, following which four police personnel, including the Officer-in-Charge of Bistupur police station, were suspended.
Custodial Assault Allegations Also Under Scrutiny
The removal of Seraikela-Kharsawan SP Nidhi Dwivedi also follows growing criticism over an alleged custodial assault on an Adivasi woman at the Kapali police outpost.
Three police personnel, including the outpost in-charge, had earlier been suspended in connection with the incident.
Government Signals Zero Tolerance on Crime
Political and administrative circles view the Chief Minister’s decision as one of the strongest messages yet from the Jharkhand government on law and order.
By announcing the action publicly, the government has underlined its zero-tolerance approach towards crime and signalled that accountability within the police force will be enforced without exception.
