Daltonganj, July 10: A 27-year-old woman allegedly threw her two minor daughters into a well, killing them, before jumping into the same well in Jharkhand’s Palamu district. Villagers rescued the woman, who was later arrested on charges of double murder.
The incident took place around 9 pm on Wednesday at Kanda village under the Nawa Bazar police station limits.
Domestic dispute allegedly led to tragedy
Nawa Bazar police station officer-in-charge Sanjay Yadav said there had been a quarrel between Chhote Lal Prajapati, 34, and his wife Sarita on Wednesday night.
According to police, Sarita allegedly first snatched her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Dolly, who was asleep in her grandmother’s lap, and threw her into a nearby well.
She then allegedly picked up her four-year-old daughter Priya, who was also asleep, and threw her into the same well.
Eldest daughter escapes
Police said Sarita then allegedly attempted to throw her eldest daughter, seven-year-old Khushboo, into the well. However, the child resisted and raised an alarm, managing to escape.
Sarita then jumped into the well. By then, villagers had gathered at the spot and rescued her.
Police said the well contained around 14 feet of water, and the two children died due to drowning.
FIR lodged, accused arrested
The victims’ grandfather, Govind Prajapati, lodged an FIR against Sarita at the Nawa Bazar police station.
Police arrested Sarita on Thursday and sent her to judicial custody on charges of murdering her two daughters.
The investigation is underway.
