Auckland (New Zealand), July 14: The Bihar Jharkhand Association of New Zealand (BJANZ) showcased Bihar’s rich cultural heritage with a captivating performance of the traditional Jhijiya folk dance during the community celebrations organised to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Auckland on July 11.
The performance formed part of the cultural programme held in honour of the Prime Minister’s visit. It highlighted the vibrant traditions of Bihar before a large gathering of members of the Indian diaspora.
Traditional Jhijiya Dance Captivates Audience
Widely regarded as one of Bihar’s most cherished folk dances, the Jhijiya performance was warmly applauded by the audience, making it a proud moment for the Bihar and Jharkhand community in New Zealand.
The dance was performed by Reetu, Arti, Avni, Kiran, Indu, Nidhi, Namita, Bidisha, Neha and Komal, whose months of preparation and dedication brought the traditional art form to life on stage. Their graceful performance reflected the cultural richness of Bihar while underscoring the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage far from home.
Showcasing Bihar’s Heritage on a Global Stage
BJANZ said participating in such a significant national event was an honour and an opportunity to present Bihar’s cultural identity on an international platform.
“The performance symbolised our continued commitment to preserving and promoting the traditions, values and cultural identity of Bihar and Jharkhand while contributing to New Zealand’s vibrant multicultural society,” the association said in a statement.
The event also highlighted the growing contribution of the Bihar and Jharkhand diaspora to New Zealand’s multicultural landscape by showcasing India’s rich and diverse cultural traditions.
Community Effort Behind the Performance
The association expressed gratitude to all the performers, choreographers, volunteers and supporters whose efforts made the performance possible. It also thanked the event organisers for providing community organisations with an opportunity to celebrate India’s cultural diversity during the Prime Minister’s visit.
BJANZ said the performance’s success reflected the dedication and teamwork of its members, whose collective efforts ensured that Bihar’s cultural heritage was represented with authenticity and pride.
Commitment to Preserving Cultural Heritage
Reaffirming its long-term vision, BJANZ said it remains committed to promoting the traditions of Bihar and Jharkhand through cultural programmes, community engagement and initiatives that encourage younger generations to remain connected with their roots while strengthening cultural exchange in New Zealand.
