Dhanbad, July 14: In a significant recognition of scientific excellence, Dr Soumitra Maity, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, has been selected for the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Bronze Medal 2027 for his outstanding contributions to chemical research.
The prestigious award, conferred by the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI), is among the country’s most respected honours for young and mid-career scientists. It recognises researchers for originality, scientific excellence and impactful contributions to the field of chemistry.
As part of the honour, Dr Maity will deliver a 10-minute flash talk and present a research poster at the 39th CRSI National Symposium in Chemistry, to be held at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, during the first week of July 2027. He will also receive the CRSI Bronze Medal at the event.

Congratulating Dr Maity, Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, described the recognition as a proud moment for the institute.

Research Focuses on Sustainable Chemistry
Dr Maity’s research spans radical chemistry, photoredox catalysis, organic synthesis and the total synthesis of natural products.
His work focuses on developing innovative catalytic methodologies, particularly under metal-free conditions, to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly organic synthesis. His research has been published in several leading international journals, including Nature Communications.
Distinguished Academic Journey
Dr Maity obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (Jadavpur University) in 2010. He completed his M.Sc. from the University of Calcutta and his B.Sc. from Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur.
He subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Arkansas and the University of California, Berkeley, before joining IIT (ISM) Dhanbad as an Assistant Professor in 2015. He was promoted to Associate Professor in April 2022.
A Career Marked by Prestigious Honours
The CRSI Bronze Medal adds to Dr Maity’s growing list of academic distinctions. He is also a recipient of the DST INSPIRE Faculty Award (2013) and has been elected a Fellow of the Indian Chemical Society.
The latest recognition further strengthens IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s reputation as a leading centre for scientific research and innovation, reflecting the institute’s continued contribution to cutting-edge chemical sciences and advanced research.
