Daltonganj, September 7: Palamu police will give special attention to senior citizens and women visiting police stations, with officers directed to ensure that their grievances are heard promptly and patiently.

The directive was issued by Palamu Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary during a crime review meeting held in Daltonganj on Saturday.

As part of the new arrangement, officers in charge of police stations have been instructed to maintain a separate register for senior citizens, recording their arrival, the purpose of their visit and the action taken by police.

Police patrol teams have also been directed to make periodic visits to the homes of senior citizens to check whether they are facing any problems that require police intervention.

A similar system will be put in place for women who approach police stations with complaints. Police stations will maintain records of their visits, the purpose of the visit and the intervention or legal assistance provided by the police.

Police sources said senior citizens tend to visit police stations more frequently in rural areas than in urban and semi-urban locations.

Land disputes among major concerns

Officials said land-related disputes are among the issues that frequently bring elderly people to police stations in rural Palamu. In some cases, elderly parents complain of alleged harassment by their sons and daughters-in-law over property disputes.

Police officials also pointed to cases involving violence against elderly parents and said family disputes over land can sometimes escalate into serious crimes.

Women, particularly in rural areas, also face challenges related to domestic violence, with police officials citing alcohol abuse by husbands as one of the factors behind such incidents.

Police sources said Palamu has also witnessed cases of serious violence within families, including alleged murders arising from marital and property disputes.

The latest directive is aimed at making police stations more responsive to vulnerable sections and ensuring that senior citizens and women receive timely assistance and legal support when they approach the police.
