LPG tanker leak triggers panic in Jamshedpur’s Sonari area

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, September 9: Panic gripped Domuhani area of Sonari on Wednesday when an LPG tanker developed a sudden gas leak, prompting police to cordon off the stretch and halt vehicular movement as a precautionary measure to prevent a potentially serious mishap.

The tanker was carrying a consignment of LPG when its driver noticed the leakage while passing through the area. He immediately pulled the vehicle over to the roadside and informed the company management and police.

Soon after receiving the information, a team from Sonari Police Station rushed to the spot. Given the highly inflammable nature of LPG, police stopped vehicular movement from both sides of the road to prevent any possible source of ignition from reaching the tanker.

Meanwhile, officials of the LPG company, accompanied by a technical team, reached the site and assessed the situation. After taking the necessary safety measures, the team successfully brought the leakage under control and made the tanker safe.

Driver’s alertness averts bigger mishap

A Sonari police officer said the situation could have taken a dangerous turn if a spark from a passing vehicle had come into contact with the leaking LPG.

Such an incident could have triggered a major fire or explosion, posing a serious threat to motorists and people living or travelling in the vicinity.

The officer said the driver’s alertness played a crucial role in preventing the situation from escalating, while the immediate police response helped secure the area and minimise the risk to the public.

Traffic restored after leak contained

Once the leakage was completely stopped and the area was declared safe, traffic movement was restored.

The tanker was subsequently allowed to proceed to the company premises under appropriate safety precautions.

The incident once again underscored the importance of driver vigilance and a swift emergency response while transporting hazardous materials through densely populated urban areas. Timely intervention by the driver, police and the company’s technical team helped avert what could have been a major accident in the busy Sonari area.
