IIT (ISM) Dhanbad chip honoured at SEMICON India 2026, earns national recognition

Dhanbad, September 17: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s growing contribution to indigenous semiconductor research and chip design received national recognition at SEMICON India 2026, with a chip developed by a team of students and research scholars led by Prof. Rajeev Kumar Ranjan, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics Engineering, being honoured during the Chip Handover Ceremony in New Delhi on Thursday.

Research scholar Rahul Ranjan received the chip and memento from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with students representing 20 institutions from across the country.

The chip was developed under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)-funded project, “Ultra-Low Power Assistive Smart Glass,” and fabricated at the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL), Mohali.

Designed for Low-Power Real-Time Image Processing

The digital Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chip has been designed for real-time image processing using an OV7670 camera, with a focus on compact and energy-efficient smart-glass applications.

The architecture and processing concepts developed for the chip could potentially be extended to applications in biomedical imaging, assistive healthcare devices, wearable sensing and edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems.

Speaking about the achievement, Prof. Rajeev Kumar Ranjan said, “It is a proud moment for our department that a chip developed by our team has been recognised at SEMICON India 2026. Such recognition motivates young researchers to pursue impactful work in semiconductor design and strengthens India’s push towards self-reliance in chip manufacturing.”

Live Telecast Organised at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

The live telecast of the inaugural ceremony and Chip Handover Ceremony was organised at Penman Auditorium, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, on Thursday.

Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Registrar Prabodh Pandey, Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof. Sanjoy Mandal, Associate Dean (Students Well Being) Prof. Sanjeev Anand Sahu, Prof. Rajeev Kumar Ranjan and others were present during the programme.

The recognition underscores IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s contribution to indigenous semiconductor research, low-power chip design and semiconductor innovation, particularly through projects supported by MeitY.
