Jamshedpur, Sept 23: Police have intensified their crackdown on illegal gambling and lottery operations in Jamshedpur, arresting four persons in separate raids conducted in the Sitaramdera and Sakchi police station areas.
Cash, mobile phones, lottery boards, notebooks containing numbers, diaries, documents and other materials allegedly linked to gambling and lottery activities were seized during the operations.
Acting on a tip-off about illegal gambling in Chhayanagar under Sitaramdera police station, a special police team conducted a raid after verifying the information.
Several people allegedly involved in the activity managed to escape under the cover of darkness after spotting the police. However, the team arrested Rahul Kumar at the spot.
Police said a search resulted in the seizure of Rs 1,820 in cash, a Samsung Android mobile phone, a pocket diary, a notebook and paper charts allegedly related to gambling and lottery activities.
During preliminary questioning, police reportedly found that people were being attracted to the activity with promises of making quick and easy money.
Three arrested in Sakchi lottery operation
In a separate operation, police raided the Birsa Munda Auto Stand and Murgi Line areas under Sakchi police station following information about illegal lottery and gambling activities.
Three persons — Neeraj Kumar Singh, Dilip Paswan and Arvind Kumar Singh — were arrested during the raid.
Police recovered two lottery boards, Rs 2,510 in cash, notebooks containing different numbers, a Realme mobile phone and hard copies of screenshots related to the Goa Star app, officials said.
Preliminary interrogation reportedly indicated that the accused allegedly attracted people by promising substantial winnings and facilitated betting through the app.
Police probe wider gambling network
Following the arrests, police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the extent of the alleged illegal gambling and lottery network operating in the city.
Investigators are examining the seized mobile phones, documents, number sheets, lottery boards and other materials to identify the alleged organisers and determine whether more people were involved.
Police are also examining possible links between the two operations and other cases involving illegal gambling and lottery activities in Jamshedpur.
