No caste, gender or disability-based discrimination found at Khunti sub-jail: Inspection team

Khunti, September 24: A joint inspection of Sub-Jail, Khunti found no discrimination among inmates based on caste, gender, disability or any other ground, officials said on Thursday. The inspection was conducted by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Khunti, and the Board of Visitors in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions in Sukanya Shantha vs. Union of India.

The inspection team observed that inmates were being accommodated in barracks and wards without discrimination and that basic facilities, including food and medical services, were being provided equally.

Jail kitchen, hygiene facilities reviewed

The team also inspected the jail kitchen and directed the prison administration to maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene. Officials stressed that the principles of equality and dignity must continue to be observed across the prison premises.

Inmates briefed on legal rights

During the inspection, inmates were informed about their legal rights and access to free legal aid. They were told that they could approach the District Legal Services Authority, Khunti, for legal assistance or contact the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) toll-free helpline at 15100.

The inspection was conducted at 4:30 pm by Rasikesh Kumar, Principal District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, DLSA, Khunti; Md. Javed Hussain, Deputy Commissioner, Khunti; Rishabh Garg, Superintendent of Police, Khunti; Kamlesh Behera, Secretary, DLSA, Khunti; and Lalit Ranjan Pathak, Chief Medical Officer, Khunti.

The inspection focused on ensuring equality, dignity, basic amenities and access to legal assistance for inmates in line with the Supreme Court’s directions.
