Tyre burst kills mechanic at Magadh Colliery in Latehar

Daltonganj, September 30: A 40-year-old mechanic was killed after the front tyre of a parked tipper truck burst while he was changing it at Magadh Colliery under Balumath police station limits in Latehar district on September 28 evening.

The deceased was identified as Ravinder Nath, a resident of West Singhbhum. According to sources, Nath was changing the front tyre of an empty tipper truck inside the colliery garage when the tyre exploded with tremendous force.

The impact reportedly threw him several feet away from the vehicle, causing severe injuries to his head and chest.

Victim Declared Dead at Balumath CHC

Balumath police station officer-in-charge Anubhav Sinha confirmed the incident and described it as a freak accident. He said the tyre burst occurred while the vehicle was stationary and the mechanic was working on it.

Nath was immediately rushed to the Community Health Centre, Balumath, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Sudden Release of Compressed Air Suspected

Police said the incident appeared to have been caused by the sudden release of compressed air from the tyre. Such an explosion can generate considerable pressure and cause serious or fatal injuries to anyone working close to the tyre.

The incident has highlighted the risks faced by mechanics involved in tyre maintenance, particularly while working on heavy vehicles such as mining-sector tipper trucks.

Accident Raises Safety Concerns at Mining Site

Unlike tyre bursts involving moving vehicles, which can cause skidding, loss of control or overturning, the incident in Balumath occurred while the tipper was parked inside the colliery premises.

Police have initiated necessary proceedings in connection with the accidental death.
