Jamshedpur, October 5: An alert group of commuters on Monday prevented a potentially tragic incident after a woman allegedly attempted to jump into the Subarnarekha River from Mango Bridge along with her child.
The incident caused panic on the busy bridge after some passers-by noticed the woman’s movements and realised that she and the child could be in danger. The commuters immediately intervened and managed to prevent the woman from taking the step.
They subsequently moved both the woman and the child to a safe location and informed the police.
A police team soon reached the spot and took the woman into its care. She is being questioned to establish the circumstances that brought her to the bridge, while efforts are also underway to contact her family members.
According to preliminary information, the woman is a resident of Bhalubasa under Sitaramdera police station. Police said she had reportedly been under considerable stress over an ongoing family dispute for the past few days.
Investigators suspect that the dispute may have contributed to her distress, although the exact circumstances behind the incident have not yet been established.
Police are trying to ascertain when and under what circumstances the woman reached Mango Bridge with her child. They are also gathering details about the nature of the family dispute and whether she had spoken to anyone shortly before arriving at the bridge.
Timely intervention averts possible tragedy
The prompt intervention by commuters proved crucial in ensuring the safety of both the woman and her child.
A crowd gathered on the bridge shortly after the incident, briefly creating a commotion in the area. Police officials spoke to the woman before taking her away from the spot for further inquiry.
