Daltonganj, October 28: Palamu police rescued 73 bovine animals from two modified 10-wheel containers intercepted at separate locations along National Highway 39 during a late-night operation on October 27.
The operation was conducted by a Sadar police team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rajesh Yadav. One container was carrying 38 animals, while the other had 35, Yadav said.
The two vehicles were intercepted around 2.50 am at Jorekut and Pokhraha, at separate locations along NH-39, the police officer said.
Six Arrested, Sent to Judicial Custody
Police arrested the two drivers, identified as Azeem, 28, and Farzan, 28, both residents of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly transporting the animals illegally in violation of animal welfare laws.
Four other men were travelling in the containers, with two in each vehicle. Police identified them as Taimur, 42, Raja, 30, Gulzar, 37, and Irshad, 37, all residents of Lohardaga district in Jharkhand.
The six accused were produced before a court in Daltonganj and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody on October 27. They were subsequently sent to Daltonganj Central Jail.
Police have invoked provisions of the Jharkhand Bovine Animals Prohibition of Slaughter Act, 2005, along with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Consignment Bound for Bihar
According to police, the consignment was being transported from Lohardaga to Dehri-on-Sone in Bihar. The movement was intercepted following a tip-off received by Palamu Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary, who directed SDPO Yadav to take action.
The drivers did not attempt to flee at high speed and took time to switch off the vehicles’ engines, Yadav said.
Vehicle Registration Numbers Under Verification
Police said the two containers bore transport registration numbers associated with Uttar Pradesh and Nagaland. The registration details are being verified to determine whether the numbers are genuine or forged.
The rescued 73 bovine animals have been handed over to civilians under zimma arrangements for feeding and care. According to the report, the caretakers may use proceeds from milk sales to help meet the animals’ upkeep costs, with milk prices ranging from Rs 45 to Rs 60 per litre.
