Jamshedpur, October 28: Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop 110 kV power infrastructure to meet the 90 MW electricity requirement of BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery.
The collaboration will strengthen power connectivity for the refinery project while supporting the expansion of industrial and transmission infrastructure in Mumbai’s strategically important Trombay area.
The PRFCCU project is a landmark initiative in India’s refining sector and the first of its kind being executed in the country. It marks a strategic milestone in BPCL’s efforts to recover higher-value products and diversify into petrochemicals.
With a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and an estimated investment of approximately ₹14,203 crore, the project is BPCL’s second-largest project currently under execution and the largest ever undertaken at its Mumbai Refinery.
By enhancing domestic value addition, the project is expected to contribute to India’s energy security and the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Tata Power to Develop 110 kV Connectivity
Under the MoU, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the associated power infrastructure required to meet the PRFCCU project’s electricity needs.
The infrastructure development will involve substantial investment in strengthening power connectivity and transmission facilities. The work is envisaged to be completed over approximately 24 months, with a combined estimated outlay of around ₹250 crore for Tata Power and BPCL, subject to applicable approvals and project milestones.
Transmission Network to Support Industrial Growth
Beyond meeting BPCL’s immediate power requirements, the initiative is expected to strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in the Trombay area. This will help support anticipated growth in electricity demand from large industrial consumers and other concentrated-load developments in the strategically important industrial zone.
As part of its long-term plan to build a robust, reliable and future-ready power network for Mumbai, Tata Power also plans to strengthen its transmission infrastructure at Trombay by developing a 400 kV transmission facility over the next five years.
The planned augmentation is expected to enhance power evacuation capacity and support reliable grid availability for Mumbai’s industrial and commercial sectors.
Focus on Energy Security and Self-Reliance
Through the strategic collaboration, Tata Power and BPCL have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Mumbai’s energy infrastructure and enhancing energy security.
The initiative also underscores Tata Power’s focus on investing in transmission and distribution infrastructure to support long-term industrial growth and India’s broader goal of energy self-reliance.
