Within about an hour of withdrawing the money, a miscreant allegedly snatched the entire amount while she was walking down the street to take an e-battery rickshaw to her home in Salatuwa village.

The incident occurred in broad daylight in a busy part of Daltonganj, barely a kilometre from the bank. The victim’s cash was taken from her bag, which was subsequently abandoned along with her bank passbook by the roadside.

CCTV footage helps police identify accused

According to police sources, Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary directed town police to crack the case and recover the stolen money.

SDPO Sadar Rajesh Yadav, along with Town Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jyotilal Rajwar and former Chainpur police station officer-in-charge Sriram Sharma, examined CCTV footage from the area.

The footage showed a young man behaving suspiciously before allegedly taking the cash from the woman’s bag and transferring it to his pockets. He then abandoned the bag and bank passbook beside the road.

Police scrutinised the suspect’s movements captured on CCTV, identified him and subsequently apprehended Ansari.

Entire amount recovered in two instalments

Police recovered the stolen Rs 4 lakh in two instalments. The first recovery was Rs 1 lakh, followed by the remaining Rs 3 lakh.

The entire amount was recovered intact, and police sources said the accused had not got an opportunity to spend any part of the stolen money.

Sources described the recovery as significant, noting that cases involving the recovery of the entire amount snatched or stolen are relatively uncommon.

Swift action brings relief to victim

The incident had attracted attention because the victim was a woman, the snatching took place in broad daylight and the area was crowded with people during the pre-Diwali period.

The recovery of the entire amount within 48 hours brought relief to the victim and marked a significant breakthrough for Daltonganj town police.
