Jharkhand: IIT ISM Dhanbad students’ team emerge champion in national Robotics competition

Dhanbad, January 1: The IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad team emerged as champion in the robotics national competition ‘Robofest Gujarat 3.0’ held at Science City Ahmedabad from December 29 to December 31, 2023.

The team comprising Shailesh, a 3rd Year Electrical Engineering student, and two final-year students, including Tanishq Chaudhary of Electronics Engineering and Aniket Kumar Roy of Mining Engineering, emerged as toppers in their category of wheeled balancing Robot of the competition.

They bagged 1st cash prize of Rs 10 Lakh for their achievement.

Dr Arun Dayal Udai, assistant professor of the Mechanical Engineering department, who was the faculty mentor of the IIT (ISM) team for the competition, shared details that the IIT ISM team developed a self-balancing robot that can carry water in an open container, which can traverse through the given path.

Divulging more details, Ashish Siddharth, a PhD (Mechanical Engineering)student and mentor of the team, said, “Our team earlier won a cash prize of Rs 50 thousand in the level 1 of the competition held in January last year, during which the participating teams were required to submit their concept note in the form of mechanics, the methodology of making Robot and components & design of Robot.

He said 150 teams across the country qualified in seven categories for Level 2 of the competition. “In Level 2 of the competition held in June, the 29 qualifiers of Level 1 of the Self Balancing Robot Category were required to submit a functional small robot as per their concept. We also sailed through and won the cash prize of Rs 2 lakh by emerging topper in our respective category,” he said.

Altogether, 67 teams of all seven categories qualified for Level 3 of the competition. Level 3 of the competition was held from December 29 to 31 in Ahmedabad, 2023. “Altogether, 11 teams of the Self Balancing Robot category that qualified after level 2 were required to build their real prototype robot as proposed in the earlier two stages,” said Siddharth.
