Daltonganj, Jan 1: The Palamu Chalak Sangh is up in arms against the new provisions incorporated into the Bhartiya Nayaya Sanghita in a hit-and-run case.
There is imprisonment of 10 years and a fine up to Rs 7 lakhs if the driver accused of being hit runs away from the victim without informing the accident to the nearest police station or any magistrate.
Under the new provisions, a driver must not run away but inform the police or the magistrate.
It is said to be easier than done as the moment the accident occurs, a hostile mob emerges, first asking for the religious identity of the driver in question, and accordingly, the rest of the action follows.
If a driver stays put at the place of an accident, he is bound to be lynched. He escapes to save himself from the fury of the frenzied mob.

Now, a driver’s escape from the site of the accident will land him in jail for ten years, besides coughing up Rs 7 lakhs.
Earlier, it was only two years’ imprisonment.
A five times more imprisonment from two years to 10 years and Rs 7 lakh cash as a fine will reduce the driver to rubble.
A driver said, “No driver hits any deliberately. It just happens. Sometimes, external factors cause a hit. Fog is the worst culprit.”
When reminded that it is fleeing from the site of the hit that will push the driver to 10 years in jail and seven lakhs cost of a hit which is to be avoided, the driver said, “The driver then will not be alive to tell as to how it occurred as mob would do the driver its medieval treatment by then.
