Jamshedpur, Jan 4: A wild elephant fell into a deep dry well while rampaging in the paddy field at a village under Nimdih block in Chandil sub-division of the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district late on Wednesday night.

The fallen elephant which is one of a herd comprised of 16 elephants fell into the dry well accidentally at about 10.00 pm when a team of elephant drivers was trying to drive away the herd from the field and also the village.

Soon after the elephant fell victim to the mishap, the incident was noticed by a villager who was present at the scene along with the elephant drivers. The villager had immediately informed the forester concerned.

Rescue underway

At about 2.00 am today, the forester reached the spot along with forest guards and after getting the incident confirmed the rescue operation started which is still on.

According to sources, the forest department officials had applied all the conventional methods to take the elephant out of the well. But as the well is very deep, they have finally pressed an excavator into service.

Sources revealed that the purpose behind pressing the excavator is to dig a deep trench connecting to the bottom of the well so that the fallen elephant could find its way out of the well easily.

Migration season

It may be mentioned here that this period is a migration season for the tuskers. Separate herds of wild elephants are moving from one jungle to another between Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand.  While in migration mode, the elephants not only do move from one jungle to another, but also tend to stray into human habitats and destroy houses as well as crops.

Presently more than one herd is anchored in the Chandil forest range which is close to the Bengal border.
