Jamshedpur, Jan 10: An armed squad of CPI-Maoist rebels reportedly shot dead a former companion Nelson Bhendra near his house under Jeraikela Thana area in West Singhbhum about 180 km away from here late on Tuesday night.

Police searching body

Having got the information about the killing, police have started a search operation in the Jeraikela Thana area for the recovery of the body.

West Singhbhum SP, Ashutosh Shekhar did not confirm about the killing of the former Naxal but said to have started a search operation for the body after getting information about the killing.

“We have also got information about the murder of a former Naxal and have begun a search operation for the body since this morning, ” said Ashutosh Shekhar while responding to the query made by The Jharkhand Story.

Nelson Bhendra who was once upon a time active in subversive activities in the Saranda area was a resident of the infamous Samtha village in Jeraikela which falls under the jurisdiction of the Saranda forest division.

As the Saranda area had earned notoriety for intense Naxal-sponsored violence in the past, the police and paramilitary forces have to follow SOP while carrying out the search operation for the body.

Bhendra was out on bail

Significantly, Nelson Bhendra had been arrested by Odisha police for allegedly extorting levy from a local company there in the neighbouring state and was released on bail from a jail in Odisha two months ago.

Moreover, the CPI-Maoist rebels tend to kill their former comrades on suspicion of being a police informer.

According to unconfirmed sources, an armed squad of Naxals had swooped over the house of Nelson Bhendra at around 10 pm on Tuesday and had taken him along to a nearby forest stretch. The killer squad had first beaten Nelson mercilessly and then shot him dead before disappearing from the scene.
