Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a Mini-Ratna subsidiary of Coal India Limited, is the state’s major coal producer and one of the largest contributors to the state exchequer.

36 mines and four washeries

The company operates 36 mines and four washeries spread across eight districts of Jharkhand. In FY 22-23, CCL produced a record 76.08 MT of coal, and motivated by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and under the leadership of Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi, the company is on track to cross 84 million tonnes in 2023-24.

Highest-ever coal offtake

Similarly, the company recorded its highest-ever coal offtake of 75.02 MT in FY 22-23. This would not only assist in reducing coal imports but also provide more revenue for the government, enabling development works in Jharkhand and other parts of the nation.

CSR projects and innovations

The eight districts where the company operates have low development indexes and are among the 112 aspirational districts in the nation. The majority of the people who live in these places are from underprivileged backgrounds. Before the Companies Act of 2013, CCL had already been executing numerous schemes for the welfare of the people. Since the Act’s enactment, CSR has matured into a strategic tool for sustainable mining. The impetus of the initiatives is on projects designed to enhance community health, women’s empowerment, drinking water facilities, sustainable livelihood, education, sanitation, skill development and promotion of sports. The company endeavours to expand its CSR footprint in the communities that it serves and generate extensive benefits for them.

CCL Ke Lal & CCL Ki Ladli

It is the company’s flagship programme in the education sector. CCL provides opportunities to talented, diligent and deserving children from underprivileged backgrounds to enter top engineering colleges in India. The students are selected through an entrance examination and receive free lodging, boarding, schooling, and coaching for IIT and other engineering entrance examinations from CCL engineers who are IIT graduates. Various beneficiaries of the scheme have now completed their education and are working in premier corporates of the country.

Sports Academy

This CSR initiative of CCL aims to lend wings to the dreams of the state’s children, nurturing them holistically so that they can scale remarkable heights in sports. Around 400 cadets, about 96% of whom belong to the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward communities, are training in ten different disciplines and have won over 1000 medals in numerous state, national and international tournaments.

The initiative has won the National CSR Award for best intervention in promoting Sports for two consecutive years. Amisha Kerketta, a JSSPS cadet, became Jharkhand’s first boxer to win the IBA Junior World Boxing Championship medal.

5000-seater state library

CCL has signed an MoU with the Department of Education, Government of Jharkhand, to construct a 5000-seater state library in Ranchi. This programme aims to improve education standards by instilling a reading culture in both kids and adults and boosting knowledge and literacy. The facility is being created on the Ranchi University campus for Rs. 65.25 crore. This project is consistent with the objective of the Prime Minister’s New Education Policy, which seeks to transform the country into a more equal and thriving knowledge society.

Centralized Kitchen

Aligned with the DPE theme focusing on “Health and Nutrition,” CCL has joined forces with the Akshaya Patra Foundation to establish a Centralized Kitchen in the Ramgarh district, with an outlay of Rs 22 crore. The project will provide Mid-Day meals to 50000 students of 538 government schools.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s call to make India a TB-free Bharat, CCL has opted to contribute to TB elimination as a Nikshaya Mitra, a Diamond Tier member of the Corporate TB Pledge. CCL has been providing monthly nutritional baskets and support for the well-being of tuberculosis patients in Latehar and Chatra districts in collaboration with the Child In Need Institute (CINI). Over 1000 tuberculosis patients in these districts benefited from the project.

CCL has been recognized as a Nikshay Mitra by the Ministry of Health, the Government of India, and the Government of Jharkhand. The company has provided Ram Krishna Mission TB Sanatorium with digital X-rays, ventilators, beds, and other equipment for effective tuberculosis care.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Latehar district administration, a project to establish 15 model labour rooms for safe delivery and reduced infant mortality in rural regions has been undertaken.

Covid Crisis Scholarship Scheme

Aware of the distress faced by orphaned children, the company launched the Covid Crisis Scholarship Scheme, which provides financial assistance ranging from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 50,000 per year per student for two years to students (Class I to Undergraduates) who have lost one or both of their parents or the primary earner in the family as a result of Covid-19.

The pupils expressed gratitude to the organisation for its essential contribution to their education during these difficult times.

Apart from these, CCL has started the first “Hospital on Wheels” for stray animals in Jharkhand as part of its CSR initiative. It has launched Residential Skill Development Training for 320 Project Affected Persons (PAPs) in partnership with CIPET (Central Institute of Petrochemical Engineering and Technology) in Ranchi for Rs. 2.24 crore.

CCL, in collaboration with Marsal Prathmik Bunkar Sahyog Samiti Ltd., an organization for Santhali tribe women working in handloom weaving, has sponsored the training of 75 tribal women in Tapin, Hazaribagh.

In another income-generating program for local women, CCL teamed with Amar Jagriti Kendra to train 200 tribal artisans in the Ramgarh district.

The company has sponsored the Ranchi district administration to strengthen and widen the Rai-Dakra Road, benefiting thousands of villagers in the command area.

Marathon

The company also organised the first registered full Marathon of Jharkhand in March 2023. The Coal India Marathon was an astonishing success, with over 6000

runners participated, and Ranchi was catapulted into the country’s sports map. The second edition of this hugely anticipated event is scheduled for February 11 in Ranchi, and the number of participants has already surpassed 7,000.
