A Towering torchbearer of tribal identity, justice: Farewell to Dishom Guru Shibu Soren Ji

ARJUN MUNDA

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dishom Guru Shibu Soren Ji — a towering figure of the Jharkhand movement, former Chief Minister, and a lifelong advocate for tribal rights, social justice, and public welfare.

His entire life was devoted to the service of the people. From leading the movement against exploitative moneylending practices to playing a pivotal role in the creation of Jharkhand, he remained steadfastly rooted in grassroots struggles. I had the honour of working alongside him during the movement and learned from his relentless spirit — how to lead with resilience and remain deeply connected to the people.

I vividly recall walking through remote villages and organising communities deep within forest regions. In those days, we confronted issues like police atrocities, displacement, compensation, and rehabilitation. It was during this time that I came to understand his unwavering commitment to justice and his unique ability to unify and inspire.

Whether in undivided Singhbhum or Santhal, I remember the beat of the and nagada echoing through the village — a call to gather that always brought people together. I witnessed this powerful connection time and again in his presence.

On matters of tribal land, his conviction was clear and consistent: tribal communities must remain connected to their land — their identity, livelihood, and future depend on it. He never wavered from this principle.

I also recall a padayatra in Khadangajhar, then a hamlet within the Raiti Mauja of Telco. Even then, his movements were closely watched by the intelligence department — a testament to the influence he wielded and the power of his leadership. From village meetings to the heart of the forests, he gave the Jharkhand movement a new direction.

Despite the challenges he faced, Shibu Soren Ji remained a guiding force through the most difficult times. His departure leaves a deep void in our hearts and in the history of Jharkhand. We will forever feel his absence.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
