New Delhi, June 16: Amitabh Kant, who played a pivotal role in steering India’s engagement during its G20 presidency, has stepped down as the country’s G20 Sherpa.
In a statement announcing his resignation, Kant spoke of embarking on a “new journey” where he plans to support India’s transformation into a developed nation by collaborating with startups, academic institutions, and think tanks.
Appointed in July 2022, just ahead of India assuming the G20 Presidency, Kant led the country’s representation at global discussions and negotiations, including hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi in 2023.

A former IAS officer of the 1980 Kerala cadre, Kant held several influential roles throughout his 45-year-long career in public service.
“My New Journey: After 45 years of dedicated government service, I have made the decision to embrace new opportunities and move forward in life. I am incredibly thankful to the Prime Minister of India for accepting my resignation as G20 Sherpa and for having given me the opportunity to drive a range of developmental initiatives and contribute to the growth, development, and progress of India,” Kant posted on X.

The position of G20 Sherpa, named after the Nepalese mountaineering guides, serves as a country’s representative in G20 deliberations, preparing the groundwork for leaders’ participation at the annual summit.
