Arti Sarin appointed as first woman chief of Armed Forces Medical Services

New Delhi, Oct 1: Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin has been appointed the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) on Tuesday, becoming the first woman officer to occupy this position, an official press release said.

Before taking on the role of the 46th DGAFMS, Vice Admiral Sarin served as the Director General of Medical Services for both the Navy and the Air Force, and she was also the Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune.

Vice Admiral Sarin was commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in December 1985 and is an alumnus of AFMC Pune.

She holds an MD in Radiodiagnosis from AFMC, Pune, and a Diplomate National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, along with training in Gamma Knife Surgery from the University of Pittsburgh.

The Flag Officer holds the unique distinction of having served in all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces, progressing from Lieutenant to Captain in the Indian Army, from Surgeon Lieutenant to Surgeon Vice Admiral in the Indian Navy, and achieving the rank of Air Marshal in the Indian Air Force.

Throughout her 38-year career, the Flag Officer has held numerous academic and administrative roles, including Professor and Head of Radiation Oncology at Army Hospital (R&R) and Command Hospital (Southern Command)/AFMC Pune. She has also served as the Commanding Officer at INHS Asvini and as Command Medical Officer in the Southern and Western Naval Commands of the Indian Navy.
