Guwahati, Nov 8: A Congress MLA was arrested by the Assam Police on Wednesday for allegedly making derogatory statements about priests, Namgharias (residents of Namghariya village in the Dhemaji district) and seers, Assam Police stated.
A senior officer of Assam Police said, “The arrested Congress leader has been identified as Aftabuddin Mollah, a sitting MLA from Jaleswar Assembly constituency (Assam).”
Police said that after receiving a complaint, a case was filed at the Dispur police station under the applicable IPC provisions.
The Congress MLA is accused of giving an incendiary speech that singled out priests, Namgharias, and spiritual leaders during a public gathering in Goalpara district on November 4th.
