THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Dhaka, Oct 17: Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants on Thursday for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was deposed in August following student-led protests, along with 45 others, over allegations of crimes against humanity.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, arrest warrants for 77-year-old Hasina and several top leaders of her party, the Awami League, were issued on the opening day of judicial proceedings initiated by the newly re-formed tribunal.

In August, Bangladesh’s interim government declared that individuals involved in the killings during the recent student protests against Hasina’s government would be tried in the International Crimes Tribunal.

Following the collapse of the Hasina government, more than 230 people were killed in violent incidents across Bangladesh, raising the death toll to over 600 since the massive student protests against a controversial quota system for government jobs began in mid-July.
