Patna, July 26: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday announced a substantial increase in pension benefits for journalists and their spouses under the Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme.

Under the revised provisions, eligible journalists will now receive a monthly pension of ₹15,000, up from the existing ₹6,000.

In addition, the dependent spouse of a deceased journalist drawing benefits under the scheme will be entitled to a lifelong pension of ₹10,000, instead of the earlier ₹3,000, the Chief Minister confirmed on X.

“I am pleased to inform that under the ‘Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme’, instructions have been given to the department to provide a monthly pension of Rs 15,000 instead of Rs 6,000 to all eligible journalists. Additionally, in the event of the death of journalists receiving a pension under the ‘Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme’, instructions have been given to provide their dependent spouse with a monthly pension of Rs 10,000 instead of Rs 3,000 for their lifetime,” CM Nitish Kumar posted.

Highlighting the rationale behind the decision, Kumar described journalists as the “fourth pillar of democracy” and acknowledged their crucial role in advancing social development.
