Ranchi, June 19: The BJP on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Congress following the war of words within the INDIA bloc after the Rajya Sabha election results in Jharkhand, accusing the party of indulging in “double standards” and blaming its allies for its own political failures.
Reacting to allegations and counter-allegations between Congress leaders and alliance partners over the defeat of Congress candidate Pranav Jha, BJP Jharkhand Chief Spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo said the Rajya Sabha setback had exposed both the frustration and opportunism of the Congress.
BJP Questions Congress’s Allegations Against Allies
Pratul Shah Deo said statements made by Congress leaders against alliance partners after the election defeat reveal the party’s inability to accept responsibility.
He referred to remarks made by Congress leaders and questioned how parties such as the RJD and CPI(ML), with whom Congress has shared power and contested elections for years, could suddenly be labelled as dishonest, corrupt or traitorous.
“Congress enjoyed power with these parties, ran governments with them and sought votes together. If they were so unreliable, why did Congress continue its alliance with them? And if they were not, why is the party making such allegations after suffering defeat?” he asked.
Sarcastic Swipe at K. Raju
Taking a dig at Congress’s Jharkhand in-charge K. Raju, Pratul remarked sarcastically whether he had acquired the “divine vision of Sanjay from the Mahabharata” to know how legislators from other parties had voted in the Rajya Sabha election.
The BJP leader said Congress appeared eager to blame others rather than introspect on the reasons behind its candidate’s defeat.

‘Allies Are Useful Until Congress Loses’
Pratul alleged that Congress has historically treated allies as valuable only as long as political power remains within reach.
“This has always been the political character of Congress. Allies remain respectable as long as power is assured, but the moment Congress suffers a setback, it starts throwing mud at its own partners,” he said.
According to him, the latest controversy demonstrates Congress’s tendency to shift blame rather than accept accountability.
BJP Cites Tamil Nadu Example
The BJP spokesperson also accused Congress of abandoning long-standing allies when politically convenient.
Referring to developments in Tamil Nadu politics, he claimed that Congress had distanced itself from old allies and altered political equations purely for electoral considerations.
Pratul said the party’s actions reflected “opportunistic politics” driven by the desire to remain politically relevant.
Rajya Sabha Result Sparks Alliance Tensions
The BJP’s remarks came amid escalating tensions within Jharkhand’s ruling INDIA bloc following the Rajya Sabha election in which NDA-backed Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani and JMM candidate Baijnath Ram emerged victorious, while Congress-backed Pranav Jha lost.
The result has triggered allegations of cross-voting and betrayal within the alliance, with Congress, RJD and CPI(ML) leaders publicly defending their positions and questioning one another’s role in the outcome.
Pratul said the episode had exposed both the “frustration and arrogance” of the Congress.
“The people are watching closely. A party that cannot respect its own allies can hardly be expected to respect the trust and mandate of the people,” he said.
