Kolkata, August 13: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed that the investigation into the alleged rape and death of a woman doctor be transferred to the CBI.

The court ordered the Kolkata Police to transfer the case diary to the CBI by this evening and to provide all other documents by 10 am on Wednesday.

On August 9, a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found with injuries in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. An autopsy later revealed that she had been raped before being murdered. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 and placed in 14-day police custody.

The high court also appealed to the protesting doctors in the state to end their strike, emphasizing that they have a “pious obligation” to resume their work as doctors.

On Tuesday, junior doctors and interns throughout West Bengal maintained their strike in protest of the incident and to demand better protection for hospital staff.
