In August 2019, the central government revoked Article 370, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, and split the region into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Meanwhile, elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with results to be announced on October 4.
