Jamshedpur, March 20: The Jharkhand High Court has directed administrative verification in a land dispute linked to the proposed Sarhul festival in Saraikela-Kharsawan district, following which the Chandil sub-divisional administration has initiated a probe.

Petitioner Alleges Attempt to Occupy Land
The matter came up before Justice Ananda Sen on a petition filed by Surya Pada Mahto, who alleged that, since last year, some individuals have been trying to forcibly occupy his 7.5 acres of land at Saherbera under the pretext of organising the Sarhul festival.
He told the court that he had approached several authorities, including the local administration and police, but no effective action was taken. He also raised objections to a prohibitory order issued against him, questioning its basis.

Court Directs Verification of Ownership
After hearing both sides, the High Court directed Mahto to appear before the Chandil Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) with all relevant land documents. The court observed that if his documents establish a prima facie claim, the administration must ensure protection of his property rights.
The petition was disposed of with these directions, and the order was immediately communicated to the district administration.
SDO Initiates Inquiry
Acting on the court’s directive, Mahto appeared before SDO Bikash Kumar Ray and submitted his documents. The SDO said the matter involves a title dispute and requires proper verification.
Both parties have been asked to submit their claims, and the case has been forwarded to the circle officer for detailed inquiry. Action will be taken based on the report, he added.
Balancing Tradition and Property Rights
The case highlights the need to balance traditional community events like Sarhul with individual land rights, with the court stressing the role of the administration in ensuring lawful ownership while maintaining public order.
