New Delhi, July 31: Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday moved a privilege notice against Prime Minister Modi to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla concerning a comment made by BJP MP Anurag Thakur.
Channi, a Lok Sabha member from Jalandhar, alleged in the notice that Prime Minister Modi shared a video on the social media platform X containing excerpts from Thakur’s speech that had been removed from the House proceedings. He accused Prime Minister Modi of violating the privileges of the House.
Channi requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to accept his proposal and allow it to be brought before the House. He also urged that action be initiated against the Prime Minister for privilege violation.

What’s the issue about?
On Tuesday, during the budget discussion in the Lok Sabha, Anurag Thakur sharply slammed Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s demand for a caste-based census. Thakur remarked in his speech that those whose caste is unknown are speaking on the issue of caste-census.
“Those whose caste is not known, talk about the caste-census. I want to remind the Speaker that in this House itself, a former prime minister RG-1 (Rajiv Gandhi) had opposed reservation for OBCs,” Anurag Thakur had said.
Congress members strongly objected to this and there was significant uproar in the House.
Rahul Gandhi stated that the former central minister had insulted him. Rahul Gandhi replied, “Whoever raises the issues of Adivasi, Dalit and the backward, is abused. I will happily accept these abuses. Anurag Thakur has abused me and insulted me. But I do not want any apology from him.”
Although some parts of Thakur’s speech were removed, this particular comment remains part of the proceedings.
Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday praised Anurag Thakur’s speech in the Lok Sabha, stating that it deserved to be heard.
