Dhanbad, Dec. 25: The devotees celebrated the birth of Lord Jesus Christ on the eve of Christmas in the Churches of the coal belt on Sunday at midnight.

With the onset of the Sun, thousands of devotees with family members began thronging at city-based St. Anthony Church, St Merry Church and other Churches of the district and stayed till midnight mass.

101-year-old St Anthony Church near Dhanbad railway station witnessed a massive gathering of devotees. At 11.15 pm, with the birth of Lord Christ, the Church burst into celebration amidst the pealing of Church Bells and the singing of Carols.

Devotees celebrate Christmas in Church at night

Special prayer started at 11.30 when the Lord Christ was brought into Churni, and devotees welcomed him and congratulated each other. The celebration continued till midnight.

In Churni, besides the child Jesus, a tableau of mother Mary, father Joseph, and angel is also set up.

On the occasion, addressing the special prayer, Fr. Gyan Prakash Topno of St. Anthony Church said that Jesus was born to establish peace in the world and advised us to love each other.

At St Merry Church, Fr. Ajit Horo conducted a special prayer and shed light on the reason for Lord Jesus Christ’s birth. He preached to walk on a truthful and honest path in life.
