Ranchi, Dec. 28: The Jharkhand health department today launched a system to allot credit hours to the doctors who attend medical conferences under the Continuous medical education (CME) programme.
Additional Chief Secretary (health) Arun Kumar Singh handed over a letter in this regard to the Chairperson of the Scientific Committee Jharkhand Ophthalmological Society, Dr Bharti Kashyap, to allot CME credit hours for the annual conference of Jharkhand Eye Society to be held in Hazaribagh from March 31 to April 2.
It is happening for the first time in Jharkhand. With this, the allotment of credit hours for medical conferences of all specialities organised in Jharkhand began for doctors.
CME credit hours
C.M.E. credit hours are a measure to certify the continuous quality improvement of doctors’ diagnostic, medical treatment and surgical treatment. If the doctor has sufficient credit hours, it means that the doctor is continuously maintaining the quality of his/her diagnostic, surgical and medical treatment and is aware of the latest technical knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient, and this increases the trust of the patients in the doctor.

1 credit hour is available for a 3-hour conference. If a conference is 6 hours in a day, then 2 C.M.E. Credit hours are available. If a conference is for three days and there are 6 to 8 hours of sessions per day, then 6 to 8 CME hours are available. In this way, if a doctor attends one or two conferences in a year, he can easily get 6 to 8 CME Credit hours, and they can easily get 30 credit hours in 5 years.
Need for modification
There is also a need for some modification in the system of credit hours put in place by the NMC as CME credit hours earned in one state are not valid in another state. Apart from this, even after attending online conferences, CME credit hours are not available.
It is also required in government jobs, but the system of earning credit hours varies from state to state. There is no provision for renewal of credit hour registration and its requirement in government jobs in some states.
