Jamshedpur, September 15: Sona Devi School of Engineering and Technology under Sona Devi University celebrated the 59th Engineers’ Day with enthusiasm at the Vivekananda Auditorium on Tuesday, with speakers stressing the importance of discipline, practical learning, research and innovation in engineering education.
Speakers stress practical approach to engineering
Ravikant Choudhary, Superintending Engineer, Water Resources Department, Galudih, who was the chief guest, extended greetings to engineers and urged students to pursue their studies with honesty and discipline.
He stressed the need to balance traditional knowledge with modern technological advancements, encouraging students to combine established practices with emerging technologies.
Ajay Prajapati, Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department, Ghatshila, spoke about the evolution of engineering education in India, tracing its beginnings to Thomason College, now IIT Roorkee, followed by the establishment of the IITs.
He told students that a university’s identity is ultimately reflected in its students’ achievements and urged them to work hard, remain disciplined, and make the best use of the opportunities available to them.
VC urges students to apply knowledge to real-world challenges
Sona Devi University Vice-Chancellor Braj Mohan Pat Pingua said he had served the country as a scientist for several years and had also had the opportunity to study a dam built by Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya in Karnataka.
He encouraged students to give priority to practicality in their work and apply academic knowledge to real-world challenges.
Chancellor calls for research and innovation
University Chancellor Prabhakar Singh paid tribute to engineers for their contribution to society and nation-building. He called upon students to promote research and innovation in science and engineering and develop solutions that go beyond textbooks.
“Teachers and engineers are both engaged in the work of creation—teachers build personalities, while engineers build the nation,” he said.
Pooja Tiwari, Head of the School of Engineering and Technology, in her welcome address, highlighted the contributions of M Visvesvaraya and underlined the growing dependence of modern society on engineering and technology.
She advised students to make informed choices while selecting their engineering disciplines. Assistant Registrar Archana Singh spoke about the life and achievements of Sir M Visvesvaraya.
The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and concluded with the national song and national anthem.
Students also made PowerPoint presentations on topics related to their respective disciplines.
BSc Agriculture student Laxmi Murmu presented on the use of drones in agriculture and explained how traditional farming practices could be transformed into smart agriculture.
Computer Science student Khushi spoke on the theme of Engineers’ Day, while BSc Biotechnology students presented a paper on cloning experiments involving mice. BTech Electrical Engineering student Shantanu presented a paper on starters.
Engineers’ Day commemorates M Visvesvaraya
Engineers’ Day is observed every year on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya, one of India’s foremost engineers and a pioneer of modern engineering.
